A Strange & Winding Road: Day 19

Poppy: I am starving... I could eat a hippopotamus.

Percy (to Poppy): Do you really think that's such a good idea, honey?

Poppy (to Percy): Very funny, honey... What brings you over this way, Percy?

Percy (to Poppy): I heard tell a tale this morning of piracy, kidnapping, romantic entanglement & pretty boys at the Mangy Cur... and wanted to see if you were alright... I mean, your names didn't come up, but I just had a feeling, honey.

Poppy (to Percy): ... Hmmm, that is interesting.

Percy (to Poppy): Are you seriously going to try and pretend that you didn't have anything to do with it, honey? Keep in mind, I know when you're lying.

Poppy (to Percy): I wasn't going to lie to you, per se... Just play dumb. :-P

Percy (to Poppy): Funny... So, is everyone okay? Are you feeling alright? The tiny human doing okay?

Poppy (to Percy): Heehee. Yes, Percy, everyone is doing okay... even the baby. You can say the word baby, can't you? Say it with me...BAY BEE.

Percy (to Poppy): Of course, honey. I know it in multiple languages, I even know where they come from... Nonetheless, it just seems weird to me.

Poppy (to Percy): Oh my god! It really does weird you out... I'm probably going to regret this moment of niceness, but come here...

Percy (to Poppy): What? Why? What are you doing?

Poppy (to Percy): Shhhh... Calm down. Give me your hand... Don't make a fist, you big robot sissy. I'm not going to hurt you. Sit down, Percy... Just relax.

Percy (to Poppy): Oh my god! What the hell was that?

Poppy (to Percy): Heh... That would be Victor.

Victor (to Percy & Poppy): He's a hell of a kicker. His poor mum is going to have bruised ribs by the time he makes an appearance.

Poppy (to Vincent): Good morning, lover. Did you sleep okay?

Percy (to Vincent): It still seems a bit strange to me...

Vincent (to Poppy): Mmmm. I slept well enough. Do you want something to eat, hun? (to Percy) Oh? Is it the baby part or the impending parent part?

Poppy (to Vincent): Oh my god, yes... I've been starving all morning... Can you have a tapeworm when you're pregnant?

Percy (to Vincent): Both... I understand all the technical aspects of it, but the desire to be a part of the process just isn't there. I guess it's a good thing that automatons don't procreate like that.

Vincent (to Poppy): Hee hee. I think it's more like a tiny human with whom you're sharing all your nutrients, hun. (to Percy) I could make a really inappropriate comment about all the fun and none of the consequences, but I think you'd BOTH slap me.

Poppy & Percy (to Vincent): Yes we would.

Vincent (to Percy & Poppy): Yikes! I'd better get myself to the galley before the power of your twin glares sets my head on fire!

Percy (to Poppy & Vincent): And, with that very awkward moment out of the way, I shall skeedaddle. I'm glad to see you all are okay.

Vincent (to Percy): See you later, Percy.

A few moments later:

Poppy (to Vincent): So, really... all of the fun and none of the consequences, honey?

Vincent (to Poppy): You know I didn't mean that, lover. I was just trying to make Percy squirm. Call me shallow. Have I seemed anything less than chuffed about the impending Victor?

Poppy (to Vincent): Heh... I'm just giving you a hard time, lover. :-P I know you're excited about Victor... I am, too.

Vincent (to Poppy): Hee hee. I know. It's terrifying, isn't it? Here's breakfast. We didn't have much, so it looks like it's eggs and ham.

Poppy (to Vincent): Thank you, honey, it smells wonderful... Speaking of our little bundle of joy. Any chance I can talk you into bringing some of this baby stuff back to our place in West Piedmont? It just dawned on me that it hasn't been made baby ready, at all. Maybe, you can talk your sister into helping setup a nursery? I'm sure she'd get a kick out of that.

Vincent (to Poppy): Oh good heavens! You're right. Oh my God... We have to get the whole apartment baby ready!

Poppy (to Vincent): Heh... That's what I just said, honey. Are you okay? You look a little flushed.

Vincent (to Poppy): Hmmm? Oh, I'm fine, hun. Just a little panicked we don't have the apartment ready. Let me give Mouse a call. I should probably call the Professor too, just to make sure he wasn't throttled in his sleep.

Poppy (to Vincent): Heh... Considering how Miranda was looking at him, I don't think throttling was on her mind, lover.

Vincent (to Poppy): Ha ha ha! I didn't think so either. If I were a cruel man, I would have called him first thing in the morning. (to Mouse) Hey sweet sister of mine. What time is it there? I'm not calling you arse early, am I?

Mouse (to Vincent): Huh? What? Oh... Hey, little brother... It's not early, I just way overslept... What can I do for you?

Vincent (to Mouse): I need help setting up a nursery in the second bedroom. Could a bribe you into it?

Mouse (to Vincent): Oh, of course, little brother... In fact, I know several people who would pitch in to help. Wanda's been bugging me about wanting to do something for you guys & this would be perfect.

Vincent (to Mouse): That would be excellent! When is a good time for you guys?

Mouse (to Vincent): I have no idea, but seeing as how I only work Friday & Saturday night, my whole week is free.

Vincent (to Mouse): Heh. Well, that's good, seeing as it could take a ridiculous amount of time. I've got a few things to take care of on this side, before I head out. I'll call you when I crossover.

Mouse (to Vincent): Okay, I'll see you later! I can't wait to see you.

Vincent (to Mouse): Likewise, sweet sister. It's been a million years! TTFN! (to Ripper) Hey, Professor. How are things going with your house guest?

Ripper (to Vincent): Oh, just lovely... She thinks I'm poofy. I'm not really sure how to take that.

Vincent (to Ripper): Ha ha ha! Oh. Ahem. Heh. Sorry, Professor. She said the same thing to me when we first met.

Ripper (to Vincent): Heh... Well, was this before or after she had her tongue down your throat?

Vincent (to Ripper): Heh, for me, this would be after she asked me if I was "playing cabin boy" on my Daddy's ship.

Ripper (to Vincent): Was that when you were still crewing for Teech?

Vincent (to Ripper): It was. That was, let's see, right after he made me first mate, I think. I always wondered why she signed on with Alejandro.

Ripper (to Vincent): I'm not sure, you could always ask her. She's been sitting in the guest room looking out the window for most of the day. If it's an act, she should win an Oscar, because I really get the feeling that she has no idea what to do with herself.

Vincent (to Ripper): No, I wouldn't imagine. Uh... Do you want me to talk to her?

Ripper (to Vincent): Totally up to you, Captain. I'm just trying to give her some space, but still keep an eye on her.

Vincent (to Ripper): I may. I have a suggestion where she can go at any rate. Would you mind if I stopped by before I head back to Piedmont?

Ripper (to Vincent): You're always welcome to stop by.

Vincent (to Ripper): Heh. Don't say that! I'm the King of Inappropriate Timing. Ask the Gloomies. Glad you're alright, Professor. See you soon! (to Poppy) It looks like the Professor has survived the night. Heh. And apparently, Miranda thinks he's a bit "poofy."

Poppy (to Vincent): HAHA! I'm sure she did...

Vincent (to Poppy): Hee hee. He seemed a bit hurt by the accusation. I was thinking, there's probably no place in Britannia that Miranda will be safe from her mother.

Poppy (to Vincent): That is probably a safe bet, honey.

Vincent (to Poppy): What if we put her in touch with Belinda in Rangoon? Trooping around with the rebels won't be an easy life. But it might be safer until things calm down over here. And Belinda can always use someone who's good in a fight.

Poppy (to Vincent): Hmmm, that might work, honey. It would definitely get her out from under the O'Malley radar & give her a purpose while she figures out what to do... So, are you going to talk to her about it?

Vincent (to Poppy): I was thinking about it, lover. Jacob said she was sitting in the guest room staring out the window all day.

Poppy (to Vincent): Not really surprising, honey. Her whole life had been pretty much dictated to her by her mother. This has got to be scary.

Vincent (to Poppy): Heh. It is. I know the feeling. I'll see what she says, and Mouse is going to help me with the nursery. She's also going to get Wanda involved. Heaven help us all.

Poppy (to Vincent): Oh... if we end up with a bunch of primary colors in that room, I'll know exactly who to blame.

Vincent (to Poppy): Hee hee. Don't worry. There will be no primary colors. Or pastels. Not if I can help it.

Poppy (to Vincent): Just don't let Wanda steamroll you into something, honey... I know, she can be a force of nature.

Vincent (to Poppy): Heh. You aren't kidding about that, lover. So, will you stay close-ish to the Inn while I'm away? YES, I know. I'm ridiculous.

Poppy (to Vincent): If it will make you feel better about being away for a few days than yes, I'll take the Falcon to the Inn... I'll be fine. Max, Bernard, Molly & Victor will all keep me company while you're gone.

Vincent (to Poppy): Heh. I know you will. And I know you're more than capable of taking care of yourself, 8 months preggers or no. But I love you, so I will worry. Do you want me to bring you anything? More Hostess cupcakes, for instance?

Poppy (to Vincent): I'm more worried about you going without me, lover... do you think you could bring me back some samosas?

Vincent (to Poppy): I shall be a saint, hun. What trouble can I get into in West Piedmont? Wait. Don't answer that. And I will bring you back so many samosas. Will you miss me? I'll miss you.

Poppy (to Vincent): Of course, I'll miss you... I'm almost sorry that I said anything.

Vincent (to Poppy): Heh. I'll be back almost before you can miss me too much, lover. Give me a kiss before we get to the Professor's.

Poppy (to Vincent): ... I won't know what to do with myself while you're gone. I can't remember the last time we spent a day apart.

Vincent (to Poppy): Heh. I'm not sure either. It's going to be strange not being with you, you know. I don't know how I'm going to sleep at night. We're almost at Jacob's. I can walk to the crossover point from here, so gimme a kiss that'll hold me over til I see you next.

Poppy (to Vincent): Okay, lover...

Vincent (to Poppy): Oh. Hoo! Well, that will work. Wow. Are you sure you're not trying to get me to stay with that?

Poppy (to Vincent): I just wanted to make sure you'd miss me, lover. ;-)

Vincent (to Poppy): Wow. Well, no worries about that, sweetie. I love you. I'll see you as soon as I can.

Poppy (to Vincent): I love you, too.

Meanwhile:

Mouse (to Wanda): Hey lady! Are you available to help me setup the nursery at Vincent & Poppy's place some time this week?

Wanda (to Mouse): Oh. Em. Gee. YES! But I'll bet you already knew that before you asked. Dude, this is going to be so much fun! Plus, I haven't seen Short Stack in FOREVER! I miss the half-pint pervert.

Mouse (to Wanda): Excellent! I had hoped that was your answer, but I still wanted to ask. I'm sure he misses you too.

Wanda (to Mouse): Hooray! Let me know the particulars when you have them! I'm on summer break from school, and my work schedule is pretty flexible.

Mouse (to Wanda): Well, he's supposed to be heading this way today, so he'll probably be here by tonight, so can you plan for tomorrow?

Wanda (to Mouse): Ooo! Ooo! I can and I will. I'll meet you at Vincent's tomorrow at noon, if that's OK.

Mouse (to Wanda): Sounds perfect! I'll see you then, if I don't see you sooner... you know, since we live next door to each other. :-P

Wanda (to Mouse): Awesome! See you then, Miss Mouse!

Mouse (to Eep): Hey man o' mine, are you working at the bookstore tomorrow?

Eep (to Mouse): Uh, not until later. I'm working the closing shift, 5-10. What's up?

Mouse (to Eep): Any interest in helping to fix up the nursery for Victor tomorrow?

Eep (to Mouse): Yeah. Sure. So, they finally realized they should set up a nursery, huh? Heh. Took 'em long enough.

Mouse (to Eep): Yeah. Well, Vincent does like to fly by the seat of his pants. I'm just glad that I went ahead and bought all that stuff for them.

Eep (to Mouse): Heh. Yeah, it wouldn't be Vincent if everything was thought through. We'll get them set up. You sound excited.

Mouse (to Eep): I'm excited to see him. I've missed him. He & I were such a tightly meshed unit for so long, it's been weird not having him here. I like doing home renovations & that means it's probably not too much longer before they're back with the baby. So, yep. Excited. Just chalk it up to some weird girl thing.

Eep (to Mouse): Heh. It's not a weird girl thing. You miss him. Truthfully, I miss the little pain in the ass too.

Mouse (to Eep): Heh... I promise I won't tell him you said that.

Eep (to Mouse): Heh. Thanks. I should be home soon. Want me to pick up something for dinner?

Mouse (to Eep): I'm in the mood for pizza... Is that alright with you?

Eep (to Mouse): Yeah, that sounds great! I'll pick some up on my way home. See you in a bit, pretty lady.

Mouse (to Eep): You're wonderful. I'll see you soon.

A short time later:

Vincent (to Ripper): Hey, Professor. I'm dropping in unannounced as promised.

Ripper (to Vincent): Hey there, Captain!

Vincent (to Ripper): Hey. Um... What was I doing? Oh! Right! Miranda. Is she still staring out the window wistfully?

Ripper (to Vincent): Last I checked. I brought her something to eat about an hour ago. Are you okay? You seem a little distracted.

Vincent (to Ripper): Oh. Heh. I'm going to spend a few days in Piedmont and Poppy and I just said goodbye. Sorry. My mind was somewhere else.

Ripper (to Vincent): Heh. First time apart since you guys have been a couple, huh?

Vincent (to Ripper): It is. Hee hee. It's all just a little crazy when I stop and think about it, you know? I went from being a virgin to a father in less than two years time. I mean, I know I don't do anything half-assed... Anyway! Let me go talk to Miranda.

Ripper (to Vincent): Heh... I don't think it's nearly as crazy as you make it sound. Go up the stairs to the last door on the left.

Vincent (to Ripper): Heh. Thank you for that, Jacob. I'll be down in a tick. If I'm not, wait some more. (to Miranda) Miranda? Hun? May I come inside?

Miranda (to Vincent): Sure, me boyo... Come to pass judgment on me, have you?

Vincent (to Miranda): Judgement? ME? I'm flattered you think my record is that clean, darling. No. I've just come to check on you. How are you doing?

Miranda (to Vincent): I honestly have no idea, Vincent.

Vincent (to Miranda): Fair enough, hun. I know right now you may not be in the best head-space to make any decisions but Poppy and I know a lass in Rangoon who will probably be willing to take you in. I won't lie to you, hun... She's a rebel, fighting against CLANNG, so it won't be safe, but it should be far away enough from your family to be safe. Um, from them, at any rate. Belinda is good people. She'll take good care of you, and she can use all the help she can get.

Miranda (to Vincent): Oh... Do I really have any other options, me boyo? I mean, the last time I ran off Ma went easy on me, but if she gets a hold of me this time, I'm dead.

Vincent (to Miranda): I know, hun. But, that doesn't mean you have to go anywhere you don't want to. It's an option, but it's not the only one. I know it seems like the end of the world right now... But it's worth the heartache in the end. Trust me. Is the first time you ran off when you crewed with Captain Teech?

Miranda (to Vincent): Aye. I had gotten tired of Ma making everything sound like it was for the good of the family when really it's for her. Did you know that all the Captains are Captains in name only? We're not allowed to make any decisions unless it's run by her first. Oh sure, we're allowed to make day to day decisions, but major ones always have to go through her. And, woe to anyone that disagrees with her decision... I didn't want to go after you, you know. Ma was mad about Lynch & the pending marriage of my sister to Bellamy. I thought they were both awful.

Vincent (to Miranda): Heh. Well, good to know you have no desire to stab me in my neck. That puts you on a short list, you know. :-P I don't know if you want to know this but from what we've heard, Hiiri's little homicidal half-pint Carver was the one who dispatched Lynch. And for what it's worth, I didn't want things to end the way they did with Bellamy, but he didn't leave me a lot of options.

Miranda (to Vincent): Carver being involved with Lynch's death doesn't surprise me, at all... As for Bellamy, he was right pillock. Getting involved with Hiiri in the first place was just asking for trouble.

Vincent (to Miranda): Well, you're not getting any arguments on either point from me. hun. Think about Rangoon, Miranda.

Miranda (to Vincent): Can I have a day or so to think about it?

Vincent (to Miranda): Of course! I won't dream of asking you for an answer now. It's a lot to think about. There's one more thing... I know how you feel. I stole money from my dad, and ran away from my abusive, horrible family when I was 15. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life. Just, FYI.

Miranda (to Vincent): Oh... Heh... Well, I'm only ten years later... I guess, better late than never.

Vincent (to Miranda): Hee hee. To be fair, I had plethora of interesting injuries and a death threat that helped spur me along.

Miranda (to Vincent): Well, apparently, death threats work as a great motivator, case in point... Um, I know I have no right to ask this, but can you do me a favor, Vincent? I really put my foot it in this morning with Jacob & I'm not much good at apologies.

Vincent (to Miranda): You want me to apologize to the Profess--I mean, Jacob for you?

Miranda (to Vincent): Yeah... I'm worried I'll say the wrong thing. I sort of implied that I thought he was a bit of a poof.

Vincent (to Miranda): Hee hee. Yes, he mentioned that.

Miranda (to Vincent): I didn't mean it the way it sounded, but he makes me a bit nervous.

Vincent (to Miranda): Ha ha ha! Well, I can certainly understand that. More than you can know. I'll let him know. I should get going. Let me know if you want us to put you in touch with our contacts in Qin.

Miranda (to Vincent): Thank you... I'm going to think about for a day or so. I'll let you know.

Vincent (to Miranda): Sounds good, hun. (to Ripper) I'm headed out, Professor. Miranda wanted me to apologize on her behalf for calling you poofy, by the by.

Ripper (to Vincent): Oh really? Thanks for coming.

Vincent (to Ripper): Mmm hmm. Heh. She said you intimidate her. So you know, I offered to put her in contact with some folks I know in Rangoon if she needs to get out of town.

Ripper (to Vincent): What!?! That's absolutely ridiculous, she's a scary ass pirate captain... Oh well, That might be the best course of action for her.

Vincent (to Ripper): Heh. I'm afraid you're going to come to terms with the fact you make people nervous, Professor. And, we'll have to see what she wants to do.

Ripper (to Vincent): If you say so, Captain... I should go talk to her.

Vincent (to Ripper): I DO say so. If memory servers, I've said it before as well. Heh. I'll see you later. Need anything from the other side?

Ripper (to Vincent): I think I'm good. Safe journey!

Vincent (to Ripper): Later, tater!

Several hours later:

Vincent (to Mouse): Hey, sweet sister of mine. Does Piedmont feel a bit more faboo? I just crossed over.

Mouse (to Vincent): Why yes it does! You should spend the night with us, we're having a tiny party in your honor.

Vincent (to Mouse): Are you, really? Or are you drunk on a weekday?

Mouse (to Vincent): Um... Yes.

Vincent (to Mouse): Hee hee. Well then, I'll see you shortly.

Mouse (to Vincent): Okay.

A little while later:

Vincent (to Mouse): Heh. It looks like you're both drinking. (to Eep) Hi, Eep.

Mouse (to Vincent): We were watching Ghostbusters & playing a drinking game.

Eep (to Vincent): What makes you think I'm drunk? Um. I mean, drinking.

Vincent (to Eep): Well, the big ass grin on your face is a hint. (to Mouse) Oh dear. This sounds dangerous.

Eep (to Vincent): Heh. Yes. Well... Fuck you.

Vincent (to Eep): If that's the case, hand me a beer.

Mouse (to Vincent & Eep): Play nice, you two... Or is this some kinda male bonding thing?

Vincent (to Mouse): Hee hee. Have you MET your husband? This is how he expresses affection.

Mouse (to Vincent): Heehee... Well, it's not how he shows it with me. He still has far more clothes on. :-p

Vincent (to Mouse & Eep): Heh. Well! Don't let me stop you then.

Eep (to Vincent): Good to see fatherhood hasn't made you any less of a horrible pervert.

Vincent (to Mouse): I have to set a good example, don't I?

Mouse (to Vincent & Eep): Awww, you both missed each other. It's so cute... And terrifying.

Vincent (to Mouse & Eep): Hee hee. I missed you both, if you must know. Give me a hug before I lose consciousness. I should head to the apartment. I'm ready to drop.

Mouse (to Vincent): Heehee, I've missed you.

Vincent (to Mouse): Heh. I missed you too, sweetie. More than I can say. Give me a hug, BOTH of you. I'll see you tomorrow.
